Freshwater was once home to Alfred Lord Tennyson and sits very close to Tennyson Downs, a walker’s paradise. Freshwater is ideal for those who enjoy the outdoors as there’s also an 18 hole golf course and plenty of opportunity to get out on the water at Freshwater Bay, just south of the town. The small pebbled cove is surrounded by chalk cliffs and is supposedly one of the most picturesque bays on the whole of the island. A beautiful spot to enjoy all year round.
Freshwater is in a great position for discovering the west of the island. The Needles are further west from the town and Yarmouth is around two miles north, great for getting the ferry from Lymington. Yarmouth is a lovely harbour town with even more choice for places to eat than Freshwater. Staying on the west of the island doesn’t mean you have to miss out on seeing the east. The golden beaches of Shanklin, Sandown and Ventnor are great for families or dog owners and sailing fanatics will love Cowes, Bembridge and Seaview for their harbours and impressive views of the ocean during race weeks.
