Many of the buildings lining the streets still have period frontages adding to the quirky feeling of the many tea rooms, antiques shops and art galleries here. The town is famous for its value of their environment, Modbury banned plastic bags way before the government were even talking about them. Visit for brilliant places to shop, including the Barrow market, a great place to pick up plenty of local produce to cook up a storm in your self catering cottage.
The people of Modbury have a strong sense of community. The town regularly gets together throughout the year for several local festivals, including the Modbury May Fair which has been held in the town since 1329. It involves stalls and parades across the town and makes for a brilliant day out with all the family.
Depending on what you’re looking for, the town is a great base for heading to the coast for some surfing or the local estuaries to try sailing or kayaking. Keen walkers will love the many coastal and inland walks that are on their doorstep ready for an adventure.
If you’re keen to explore south Devon, Modbury is in an ideal location on the A379 to get out to the moors for a long meander with some picturesque scenery or head for the big city lights of Plymouth, only 13 miles west of the town. For a similar period-style town, just a little bigger, head to Dartmouth for lovely shops and harbours to discover next to the River Dart. The town is only 10 minutes from the golden sands on Bigbury on Sea and not far from the family friendly waves of Bantham beach and its famous Gastrobus.
