Alternatively, set off from your Porthtowan cottage and walk the cliff paths for as far as your legs will take you - if you're bringing your dog this will make their holiday. Walking east you will reach St Agnes and pass some of the most photographed mining buildings in the country, with the stunning cliffs and sandy beaches as a backdrop. To the east you will reach the harbour of Portreath and on beyond to Gwithian, or if you are feeling adventurous you can hire a bike and do the Portreath to Devoran cycle trail.
To the south the nearest town is Redruth which is now home to Heartlands, a free visitor attraction with a giant adventure playground for kids, art and craft studios and a funky cafe. It is also worth visiting the Tehidy Country Park which is again free and offers miles of woodland walks for the kids to explore. We would highly recommend a visit in May when the woods to the north are carpeted in bluebells.
