TwinNestled in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside is Lodge Cottage, close to the popular market town of Helmsley, foodie town of Malton and Hovingham, a delightful village with a stream, fabulous cafe and a Michelin starred restaurant. The city of York is also within an easy drive. Set in its own spacious grounds with lawns, trees and shrubs; the cottage, built of local stone and with many original features, welcomes you into its cosy interior.
Lodge Cottage sits in its own large garden, perfect for picnics and with space for children to run and explore. The entrance hall features an old church pew and an original stone floor, just the place to take off those muddy boots after a walk through the countryside or on the nearby North York Moors. The dining-room has a large farmhouse table ideal for everyone to gather around, light the open fire and listen to its crackling logs whilst sharing a feast of local produce. The cooks amongst you will have everything you need to whip up a delicious meal in the kitchen, which also has an old vintage cooking range as a feature decoration. Back through the entrance hall and up a couple of steps, the cosy sitting-room awaits. Patio doors open onto the garden and there are plenty of comfy sofas and chairs for everyone to relax into after a long day sightseeing. Cosy up in front of the open fire and spend some quality time just chatting or maybe play one of the many games the owner has kindly left for you. Leading from the sitting-room is a large bedroom which has a trundle bed which can be used for two extra children, if required please request this when booking. There is a ground floor shower-room for your convenience.
At the end of the day, climb the stairs to the two further bedrooms, one double and one twin, which share a bathroom. The sumptuous linens, garden views from every window and fresh country air will ensure a good night's sleep.
The large verdant garden is a delight, children will love playing on the lawn while you sit and watch, or maybe you will spot that bird you have always wanted to see, you will definitely hear them! Watch for squirrels, badgers, deer, owls and lots of pheasants in the locality.
Nearby is Hovingham, an estate village full of characterful cottages and a beck running through the centre. Here you will find a lovely local store for buying that extra special local ingredient and a bakery, because you have to have pudding!! For the evening you could try the Michelin starred restaurant but remember to book in advance.
Helmsley is a popular market town on the way to the coast. It boasts a castle, lots of individual shops, a myriad of restaurants serving delicious local and international fare. The National Birds of Prey Centre is a joy.
Further afield is York, with its Minster, Roman history, cosmopolitan shopping and the river where you can dine whilst you sail. A walk around the walls, with stops in quaint tea shops along the way, is a good start. Or maybe you would prefer to visit a museum or art gallery, the city has many to choose from. In Malton, the food capital of North Yorkshire, park in the square and wander around the streets taking in the many independent shops and maybe stopping off for a taste of Yorkshire at one of the wonderful eateries.
For children you are not far from Flamingo Land Resort, Eden Camp, Castle Howard and the coast where there are beautiful golden sands, great for building sandcastles. Whitby is a must with its Abbey of Dracula fame, fish and chips and old cobbled streets, or walk in the footsteps of smugglers in Robin Hoods Bay. Take a walk through the North York Moors National Park and blow the cobwebs away.
Whatever you choose your stay at Lodge Cottage will be full of wonderful and interesting experiences, and you may need to book again to fit it all in!
