As its name implies, The Haven is a lovely stone cottage in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales in the quintessential country village of Gunnerside with its pretty bridge, picturesque cottages, stream and a local Yorkshire pub within strolling distance. Just the place to retreat to after a day's hiking over the beautiful nearby hills and moors. Only a short walk from the River Swale, this is a great place to stay and discover the delights of Swaledale. An unspoilt character Dales cottage, it nevertheless benefits from modern conveniences such as under-floor heating and granite worktops in the kitchen.

Once through the door, admire the stone floors and get ready to cosy up in front of the wood-burner with its stone surround and leaf through one of the many walking books to plan the next day's adventure. The dining kitchen is the perfect place to share a meal of local specialities at the vintage farmhouse table.

Later, climb the stairs from the lounge to the bathroom and two comfortable country-style bedrooms. You will enjoy a restful night's sleep and wake ready and refreshed to take in more of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. The house has a delightful rear courtyard with stone paths bordered by mature bushes and trees, and provides a welcome place to retreat to after a day exploring.

Gunnerside is nestled in Swaledale, a fantastic area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park close to the river Swale. In the village you can hear Gunnerside Beck as it makes its way under the bridge to meet the Swale. There is a tea shop in the village and a pub to enjoy nights in front of a roaring fire trying the local Black Sheep Ale. Further away, Reeth has a selection of small stores and a choice of places to share a meal. If you bring your bike, try out the Dales Bike Centre where you can have your bike serviced while enjoying a slice of home-made cake. For those who love the outdoors, getting close to nature there are glorious walks nearby, each with its own magnificent views.

Taking the road out through Muker and braving Buttertubs Pass over the moors you will come to Hawes, famous for the location of Wensleydale Creamery and home to Wallace and Gromit. Take a tour and taste the cheese where it is made. Hawes is a centre for walking with the Pennine Way passing through. Following in Wainright's footsteps it is one of the best ways to experience the Yorkshire Dales. On the way down into Hawes you will pass by Hardraw Force, England's highest unbroken waterfall at 100 feet. Not only does the National Park boast the highest waterfall, if you take the other direction out of Gunnerside you will come to the 17th Century Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in England.

There are some many beautiful villages to visit, for more waterfalls try Aysgrarth and Middleham has a castle, the birthplace and home of Richard III. Drive carefully through the village or you could bump into a procession of racehorses as they train just outside Middleham. For more history take a look at Castle Bolton where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner before escaping and making her way towards Leyburn, itself, Wensleydale's largest market town with a weekly market on a Friday.
