As you approach the hamlet of Simonstone and look up to the hill on your right you will see Low Shaw Farmhouse nestled on the hillside, surrounded by sheep enclosed by the wonderful Yorkshire dry stone walls. The front of this stunning, spacious Dales farmhouse overlooks the scattering of houses and down through Wensleydale towards Hawes, a great location for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.

Step through the wooden door into the boot-room, where there is plenty of space to leave your muddy boots, and onwards into the traditional farmhouse kitchen, complete with its many original features, and of course all mod-cons. Whip up a feast of tasty Yorkshire fayre to share with family and friends and while away the time making plans for the next day's adventure.

From there you have a choice of places to sit. To the left, is the hallway with its wonderful window seat where you can curl up and watch the wildlife, maybe spot a deer or a fox and definitely see the sheep. You then follow on into the sitting-room and cosy up on the leather sofas in front of the wood-burner and catch up on your favourite TV programmes, or just watch the flickering flames and reflect on how beautiful the Dales are.

The second sitting-room is off the kitchen and without a TV it is the perfect place to settle into the comfortable sofa and get lost in a good book, or if work can't wait, catch up on emails at the large antique desk and gaze over the countryside. Here you will also find the many games that the owners have thoughtfully left for your enjoyment.

When it's time to retire for the evening, choose one of the two staircases, each of which leads up to its own set of two bedrooms and a family bathroom, almost like two separate suites. The country-style bedrooms all have spectacular views over the Yorkshire countryside.

Not forgetting that outside at the front, where you can enjoy a coffee in the pretty south-facing garden and maybe fall asleep while counting the sheep.

A traditional stone-built market town with many independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs, as well as a farmer's auction and traditional market, Hawes is a real gem of the Yorkshire Dales. Nestled within Upper Wensleydale, it's famous for its award-winning Wensleydale cheese factory, which has been making Wallace and Gromit's beloved cheese since the 16th Century.

The surrounding scenery is absolutely stunning and is regarded as one of the best walking areas in the country. Pull on your boots and explore the likes of the Pennine Way or the Snaizeholme Red Squirrel Trail at Widdale, where you can see the furry creatures in their natural habitat - binoculars are a must!

The children will love the Dales Countryside Museum and National Park Centre, complete with steam locomotives and interactive exhibits, while Gayle Mill, a Victorian Sawmill, offers the chance to see working turbines and live demonstrations. Take a trip to Hardraw Force, England's highest single-drop waterfall and star of the film Robin Hood, and Aysgill Force waterfall for scenes of dramatic beauty.

Further afield is the town of Leyburn, walk the Shawl in the footsteps of Mary Queen of Scots or visit Castle Bolton for a spot of majestic history. For the energetic, country pursuits such as cycling, fishing, clay pigeon shooting and water sports are all available to add some adventure to your stay. You will be spoilt for choice when staying at Low Shaw Farmhouse; whatever the season, there is plenty to see and do. One stay will never be enough.
