DoubleThis retro-style retreat is the perfect place to relax, recharge and reconnect. It sits in the picturesque downland village of Jevington within the South Downs National Park, just a short stroll from the South Downs Way. The Laundry gets its name from once being the laundry/storeroom for what was then The Hungry Monk restaurant, the birthplace of banoffee pie!
Today the owners have lovingly transformed the property into a luxury and vibrant retro retreat which exudes charm with its upbeat decor. Care for nature is important to the owners and as such all the products used are environmentally friendly, mainly 'Faith in Nature'.
As you open the main door, you walk into a bright and cheery open plan living space with a cosy sitting-area furnished with comfort in mind. It has a sofa, two armchairs, Smart TV and a funky retro Bakelite radio that has been internally modified so that you can connect to it via Bluetooth and play your own playlist. The kitchen is well-equipped and has been beautifully hand-crafted with everything the chef in your party needs to cook up a holiday feast.
Enjoy meals at the dining-table or al fresco in the pretty courtyard garden. This is such a peaceful spot where you can catch the afternoon sun, listen to birdsong or take in the National Parks night skies. If your chef fancies the day off, head down the road to the Eight Bells pub which is open most days and has a varied menu and even serves breakfast.
When the time comes to retire for the night, you will find two bedrooms; both of which have Roku radios and are decorated in restful tones and beautifully dressed in blissfully soft bamboo linens. Downstairs is a light and airy king-size double which can be made into two single beds if required. This room has a built-in wardrobe and room safe. Upstairs is a double bed, and steps leading to a raised floor where there is a chest of drawers and desk should you need to work. A fabulous bathroom adjoins this room and includes a gorgeous free-standing bath. There is also a shower-room on the ground floor with a large walk-in rainfall shower.
Parking for two cars is at the front of the cottage and there is also a charging point for electric vehicles. A welcome hamper is provided on arrival so maybe enjoy these treats in the pretty courtyard garden.
Head up the lane and straight onto the South Downs Way where you can either walk or cycle to Eastbourne or across to Friston Forest. Explore a network of footpaths and cycle routes including Lullington Heath, Merchants Way and maybe go down to the village of West Dean, just a short distance from the Cuckmere Haven.
Take a stroll along the Cuckmere River with views of the Litlington White Horse or wander along the coastal paths and explore the iconic landmarks such as Beachy Head, Birling Gap and Seven Sisters Country Park. Visit the nearby village of East Dean which has a shop and holds a market on a Wednesday selling lots of lovely local produce including bread, honey, meat and vegetables. The village is also home to The Tiger Inn and a Thai restaurant.
Pay a call to the village of Litlington home to the Long Man Brewery, before heading to the beautiful village of Alfriston. Recently named as the best village in the UK, it is home to the Alfriston Clergy House, the first property acquired by the National Trust. Just outside the village is the Rathfinney Wine Estate where you can dine or book a wine tasting tour.
Pack your beachwear and head to the coast of Eastbourne with its beautiful pier, bandstand and Italian Gardens. The town centre has a variety of shops, restaurants and three theatres, The Congress Theatre, Devonshire Park Theatre and Winter Gardens. Eastbourne is also home to the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club which hosts the annual Eastbourne International Tennis Tournament, a major event which takes place prior to Wimbledon. In addition, there is the award-winning Airbourne International Air Show in August, which attracts visitors from far and wide.
A short drive will take you to Sovereign Harbour, one of the south coast's largest marinas the perfect place for dining, shopping and watching the boats.
Get tickets to Glyndebourne, a celebrated Opera House and picnic in the wonderful grounds or visit one of the many attractions including Drusillas Zoo Park, Charleston Farmhouse, Long Man of Wilmington, Michelham Priory, Arlington Raceway, Pevensey Castle, Lewes Castle, Herstmonceux Castle or Observatory Science Centre.
