Watch the waters rise and fall as they lap against the edges of Noss Creek. Make the most of the quiet beaches along the estuary here. Take a short walk to the local pubs, The Swan Inn and the Ship Inn, facing each other on either side of the creek. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to locally sourced food served in a classic pub style.
At the Swan Inn, you can turn up by boat if you’re feeling particularly adventurous. For those arriving on foot, bring along some crabbing lines and explore the waters of Pope’s Quay, looked on by the beer garden. Great for keeping kids entertained while you relax. The Ship Inn lets you sail right up to the door and sit outside enjoying the beautiful weather. On grey days, cosy up inside with newly renovated interiors with plenty of local beers to try, you’ll be sure to find something that takes your fancy.
For those who prefer cooking up a storm in their self catering cottage, there’s a baker and butcher in the village so you can try some real local produce for yourself. Gather all the family together for a home cooked meal or make the most of a romantic couples retreat with a candlelit dinner in the comfort of your holiday let.
Get out on the water and visit neighbouring Newton Ferrers across the water via the river ferry. For those who enjoy a stomp along the coastal path, the ferry will also drop you at the SW coastal path route. There are plenty of National Trust walks to explore whilst staying in a holiday cottage in Noss Mayo. Although fairly secluded, it’s very easy to get out and about from the village. Every year visitors flock to Noss Mayo for the River Yealm regatta, a lovely summer event to enjoy with all the family.
Those looking for more active pursuits could have a go at the circular swimming walks that take routes out of Noss Mayo round to the picturesque Cellar beach and along to the mouth of the estuary. The proximity to the water makes the village an ideal location for watersports; bring some kayaks to enjoy a splash under blue skies or book in for some classes with the local sailing school.
The rolling wooded hills keep the estuary well protected from Atlantic storms making it the perfect place for beginners to find their feet on the water. If you’re happier keeping your feet firmly on dry land, there are plenty of quiet spots to take kids crabbing. The idyllic summer activity to get them excited about the great outdoors.
When it comes to exploring the rest of south Devon, Noss Mayo is in an ideal place for making day trips across the county. Ten miles South East of Plymouth and the same distance from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, whatever you’re looking for while on holiday you can certainly find it in this part of the world.
