DoubleFor a touch of off-grid magic, look no further than this stunning escape with highlights including a private beach and gorgeous al fresco wood-fired bath. Set among the wilds of Argyll and Bute, nestled in the west of Scotland with breathtaking views over the sea and misty mountains beyond, this traditional croft offers a romantic escape for two away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Meaning ‘of the sea’, dog-friendly Na Mara Bothy is well-named, being just a few steps away from the shoreline, and hidden away down tranquil winding lanes on a historical estate dating back to the 8th Century, it’s as peaceful as you can get with just grazing sheep as your neighbours.
From the moment you arrive, everyday worries will slip from your shoulders as you step into the airy open plan living area. At one end, there’s a well-equipped kitchen with curving hand-built wooden worktops, gas oven and hob, gas run fridge and Belfast sink – the ideal space to rustle up meals to impress your loved one. Next to this, there’s a dining-table with pretty views from the adjacent window that’s perfect for hearty breakfasts and planning adventures, as well as peaceful evening meals where you can reflect on the discoveries of the day and the setting sun.
At the other end of the room, there’s a cosy sitting-area, complete with midnight blue sofa swathed in cushions and throws and a welcoming gingham armchair that’s perfect for a spot of reading. Whether you’re sipping a glass of wine or enjoying a board game or two, there’s a roaring wood-burner to curl up in front of – blissful for both humans and four-legged friends – that effortlessly heats the whole property. Dogs are treated too, with a comfy bed, basket and bowl on hand to make their stay just as perfect as yours.
As the day ends, you’ll discover the sumptuous double bed up among the eaves via a short climb up a whitewashed ladder staircase - a haven for drifting into a deep sleep with just the sound of the waves as your soundtrack - or perhaps choose a book to read by lantern light, and sink into the emerald-green armchair before sleep calls. You’ll find the shower-room just outside - a charming wooden lean-to complete with WC, sink and rainfall shower with plenty of hot water to wake you up in the morning and wash sandy toes after a day on the beach.
The land surrounding the bothy is serene and tranquil, with far-reaching views over the waters of the Lynne of Lorne towards the Isle of Mull. Take your morning coffee to the sun-dappled picnic bench to soak in the scenery, submerge yourself in the oh-so-romantic wood-fired bath at twilight and count the stars above you as you enjoy the crackling heat of the fire pit at night. Wandering feet can take the winding trail down to the private beach for a dip in silken waters, while adventurers can bring their own kayaks with them to explore the coastline and spot wildlife, from otters and seals to sea birds and soaring eagles. Alternatively, turn inland and take hidden paths into the ancient forest, climbing the short trail up to the summit and Lady Margaret’s Tower for spectacular views over Loch Linnhe, Loch Etive and the Isle of Mull.
If you’re looking to explore the area, you really are spoilt for choice. Known as ‘the gateway to the islands’, the bustling town of Oban is a 20 minute drive away from where you can catch a ferry to the pretty Isle of Kerrera with its historical ruins to explore and charming tea rooms to frequent (check opening times), or take a 45 minute boat trip to impressive Mull with its white sandy beaches and incredible wildlife. Alternatively, head inland to the mountains – the majestic Glencoe is just 45 minutes away where adventurers can enjoy hiking, climbing, mountain biking and wild swimming surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery to be found in Britain. Ben Nevis, the country’s highest peak, can be accessed via nearby Fort William for daring climbers or for simply gazing at. The area is also blessed with some fantastic places to eat with, of course, a focus on the spectacular seafood on offer. Head to the nearby Lochnell Arms Hotel for lip-smackingly good fish and chips, or travel up the coast to the dog-friendly Pier House Hotel in Port Appin with lovely views of the Isle of Lismore.
Open plan living-room with kitchen and dining areas. Wood-burner, renewable energy battery pack, chargeable hurricane lanterns for lighting. Gas oven with 4 ring gas hob, gas fridge, cold water tap
Bedroom with double bed
Outside access to shower-room hot shower, flushing WC and wash-basin. Robes and crocs are provided
Being so encompassed by nature, Na Mara Bothy is completely off-grid. The hideaway is lit by chargeable lanterns, and the fridge, oven and shower are powered by gas. The bothy is heated by the wood-burner and there is an endless supply of wood onsite. Due to the nature of the hideaway, there is no TV or WiFi, allowing your mind to simply switch off from the outside world and truly connect with nature and all the beauty surrounding your hidden haven.
To heat the outdoor bathtub, you will need to light a fire that sits beneath the tub. The water takes around 40 minutes to heat. This is a truly mindful experience that echoes the rustic surroundings of your tranquil hideaway.
There is only cold running water in the kitchen. Drinking water is currently provided in bottles.
The track to the bothy is very bumpy and unsuitable for low vehicles.
