Dr O'Neill February 2025

Coastguards is a truly lovely holiday home, in an incredible setting. The house is very well set up. The bedrooms are spacious and have gorgeous far-reaching views to the coast. The kitchen is fine for self-catering. Coastguards would work well for larger family groups, but note that (as previous reviews state), there isn't anywhere where a big group could sit down together on sofas, due to the design of the house (it's two old cottages now turned into one long house). This quirk might work well for many families - we liked having room to be able to work, the kids to play, and a TV room and could imagine this being appealing if you were travelling as two families, for example. The dining table is fine for a big group, and outside would be fantastic in the summer sun. We did find water pressure was low (as it often is in Bohortha, being the end of a long pipe!) It's fine as a small family, but don't be fooled by the multiple bathrooms, as you can't shower at the same time (we also found we needed to make sure the dishwasher and washing machine weren't on when using the shower, either). Bohortha is a perfect destination for anyone who likes walking or running, as you can easily access the coastpath round/over St Anthony's headland and tailor a walk/run accordingly. Portscatho is a lovely village within an hour's walk along the coastpath, or a ten minute drive. Both the Plume of Feathers and the Standard are fantastic pubs; the Standard for exceptional food, the Plume for friendliness, pub fare and drinks. The Thirstea cafe at Towan is also very friendly, has great coffee and is a good walk stopping-point. If you walk there in the winter season, make sure to look down into the cove just past the kissing gate - a favourite seal beach (we counted more than 40 each day). It's a much better seal-watching spot than nearer to Towan....

Absolutely lovely place to stay and look forward to staying again. I was nervous having read earlier reviews about steep stairs but they were absolutely fine - short flights of a little bit steeper than modern houses but nothing scary.

This is our second stay at Coastguards and we hope to book again for next year. We all, including my adult children, absolutely love it. It is so calming with such easy access to the most stunning walks and lovely Portscatho, gorgeous beaches and Thirstea café nearby. The perfect venue to completely unwind. A beautifully presented cottage in a picturesque location. The many reception rooms worked really well for us staying with extended family, some having to work during our stay. The WIFI was excellent and the walk to the ferry at Place to pop over to St Mawes a delight....
