Hayley's Hut

This is an exceptional shepherd's hut in a simply unbeatable setting - sheltered in a little copse of trees in a private lakeside setting with its very own hot tub. The gentle rolling fields of this working north Devon farm mean that Hayley's Hut has tranquil countryside views and a beautiful calm stretch of water, with your own private circular path perfect for the morning stroll, complete with lily pads and the occasional kingfisher this is the perfect retreat!

The location would have done Hayley's Hut proud just as it is but add to that the luxury of the hot tub, where you can have a 'dark skies' experience - no light pollution, just a myriad of stars and planets to try and identify - as you sip a glass of bubbly. There is an outdoor kitchen - lovingly built by the owner using reclaimed wood from the farm and complete with a sofa, solid fuel Rayburn (for cooking, toasting marshmallows and warmth) and bar stools looking out onto the rural surroundings, a fire-pit for fireside barbecues and, for snug evenings inside, a super comfy bed to tuck up into with your dog sleeping by the wood-burner as the embers glow. This idyllic retreat also has en suite shower facilities (with plenty of hot water and a flushing WC), a cleverly planned and fitted kitchen and an even cleverer double bed that smoothly folds up to reveal your dining-table. The hut is full of friendly touches that make this a mini home-from-home where relaxing is inevitable!

Arriving itself is all part of the adventure. From the Devon lanes you turn into a wide driveway to the farm, where you will be guided through the heart of the farmstead to the track that leads on down to the hut. Depending on the time of year, and especially if the cows are living inside enjoying the shelter of their winter-time barns, do expect a bit of good old 'muck and mud' as you drive between the barns. The upside is that you will see the dairy cows up close and personal as they wait for milking time and the inquisitive calves that will grow up into the herd - and not to forget Bruce, the dear little farm dog.

You may not want to set foot away from this idyllic place but, if you do, you are not far from the dramatic north Devon coast. This part of the coastline has sheer cliffs, rocky coves and an exhilarating stretch of the South West Coast Path. You can join this at Bucks Mills, a tiny hamlet tucked into a steep wooded valley, or at Hartland Point further along the coast. Clovelly is a magical unspoilt fishing village where donkeys still pull the cart loads of provisions up and down the cobbled streets - not a car in sight. If your dog wants to race along a sandy beach, Instow's wonderful beach is dog-friendly all year round and at Westward Ho! there is plenty of sand at low tide.

Head inland for wild rambles in Dartmoor National Park. Whatever the time of year you are sure to have some exhilarating walks and stunning views. Back at your rural hideaway, you are more than welcome to fish in the well-stocked lake (please bring your own rod).

Finally, to ensure the best start to your stay, you will find a scrumptious Devon cream tea awaiting you on arrival, as well as tea, coffee, sugar, marshmallows and even treats for your four-legged friend!
