Built in 1813 the pier was constructed to save guests to the island from having to walk over half a mile of wet sand to get to dry land (this happened every time the tide was out). In modern times the pier is still being used for the ferry but also the train runs to the end where there is a station. It is possible to walk the length of the pier and the views are good across the bay. Prepare for the weather as it is exposed to the elements. You can also drive across the wooden planks to the car park at the end and the cost to park is £1.
