Not suitable for dogs

Not very dog friendly as too rocky at shore edge.

We stayed at Old Down Cottage Horton (1934) and would recommend the Inn at Cranborne. Family and Dog friendly, recently refurbished, excellent food reasonably priced and the staff were friendly and attentive.

This beautiful National Trust property is well worth a visit for its art collection, Egyptian artefacts and Edwardian Japanese tea garden. With a house, garden and estate to discover you will find plenty to keep you busy here!

Rich History - combine with visit to Corfe Castle

Kingston Lacy (now National Trust-owned) was the home of Lady Mary Bankes who 'retired' to the house as part of the settlement of the second siege of Corfe Castle during the English Civil War. The Bankes family owned large tracts of land in Dorset, including the Studland Bay area, also now part of the National Trust. Kinsgton Lacy is a relatively modest stately home but is rich in history and the extensive grounds and gardens are a delight.

Kingston Lacy

Our trip to Kingston Lacy was a highlight of our west country visit. The gardens were some of the best in a national trust site from our experience .The house was also one of the best we have visited.

Take a look at Knowlton Church, built in the 12th century and found in the centre of a Neolithic ritual henge earthwork. Parking is available in the small layby at the entrance and access is through a gate. The site is managed by English Heritage.

Visit the world-famous gardens at Stourhead and sit amongst tranquil scenes. Described as ‘a living work of art’, the gardens lead visitors on a breath-taking journey. Spend a while in the 18th Century Palladian villa and Hoare family home, before wending your way around the grounds, falling in love with the beautifully thought out landscapes and classical architecture.

Beautiful landscapes to explore

A short drive away and you're in the impressive landscape of Stourhead, with its magnificent trees, lake and iconic garden structures. We visited early November when the autumn colours were blazing. A perfect morning out, whether for a lazy amble round the lake or exploring the footpaths to viewpoints and monuments. Good National Trust cafe and shop too.

A highlight of our 5 night stay

We stayed in nearby Nunney for 5 nights. Stourhead was definitely our top pick. On a sunny day it was absolutely beautiful. The scenery is stunning and it was nice to have a well-earned ice-cream in the pretty courtyard of the pub after a good walk. There are plenty of spots for taking beautiful pictures. We'd be interested to return one Autumn or see it covered in snow too.

Magical!

This is the most beautiful place you can imagine - the walk around the lake, dropping into the various buildings and grottoes, is breathtaking. All I can say is you really must visit.

Superb

A wonderful must in Dorset. Great gardens and interesting house. Well worth a visit.

A National Trust nature reserve, this three-mile curve of sand is home to many breeds of rare bird. Voted the UK's 4th top beach by Which? Magazine - though locals would probably place it higher. Studland Bay is also famous for its nudist section at Knoll Bay, the National Trust's only designated naturist beach. You will find safe shallow waters here and National Trust members can park for free.

Gets pretty busy at peak times, but it's a great place all year round - as sandy as the Bournemouth beaches but totally sheltered from the prevailing south westerly breezes. National Trust Membesr park for free. Use the road from Corfe or chain ferry from Sandbanks.
