The moment you set foot on the pier or drive off the ferry, you'll know you have arrived somewhere very special. The lovely Isle of Colonsay, known colloquially as "gem of the sea" or "the jewel of the Hebrides", offers a slower, more peaceful way of life and visitors here are sure to feel relaxed and re-energised after breathing in the pure sea air.

Just a few minutes' walk from the pier is Number One Glassard, a traditional, semi-detached crofters' cottage. Step in to the sitting-room where the picture windows invite spectacular views of the shoreline and the neighbouring islands. You will be transfixed by the changing moods of the sea and sky. Watch the sun rise over Scarba, the moon rise over Jura reflected in the sea, the flickering lighthouse on Islay, and the fishing boats between. You might also glimpse an otter on the rocks below, porpoise and basking sharks offshore, and wild goats in the field, which local legend has it are descended from those on the shipwrecked Spanish galleons.

Move through to the snug, a great room to cosy up in of an evening, with its Smart TV and collection of books to browse. Or sit around the table in the dining-room, chatting over a meal of local delicacies, warmed by the glow of an open fire. The ground floor is completed by the family bathroom. Then, after a long day exploring outdoors, head upstairs to your choice of four bedrooms, three of which have sea views, where you can drift into a peaceful night's slumber with nothing but the sounds of nature around you.

Colonsay is one of the smaller and more remote Hebridean islands. It's a so-called "island on the edge", but its small size belies the variety and seemingly large scale of its landscapes, which encompass hills and cliffs, moor and farmland, lochs both large and small, raised pebble beaches, glorious silver and golden sands and rocky, undulating shorelines.

A short drive or cycle round the loop of single track road will give you a first impression of that varied landscape. The abundance of its famed flora and fauna will also delight you - spring meadows and cuckoos, cliff-nesting seabirds, waders, seals basking on the rocks, and golden eagles soaring overhead. Every season has something different to offer.

It's easy to enjoy this under your own steam. The loop is only eight miles and it's safe. So why not hire some bikes locally or walk?

To the north, be amazed by the stunning sweep of Kiloran Bay and the Isle of Mull beyond. To the south, walk the Strand which separates Colonsay from its smaller neighbour, Oransay. At low tide, you can cross on foot and discover the historic ruins and magnificent carved stones and crosses of the 14th Century priory. Here St Columba is said to have stayed briefly in the 6th Century before moving to Iona. You can also see the mounds of long since discarded shells and imagine the Mesolithic hunter gatherers passing through over 5,000 years ago. To the west, watch the sun setting on distant Dhu Heartach lighthouse, with only Canada beyond.

If you're feeling more adventurous, dodge the rabbit holes on the golf course or hire a paddle-board; or head off-road and bag Colonsay's "MacPhees", the 22 hills over 300 feet.

If you just want to chill, visit the Colonsay and Oransay Heritage Trust Centre, the bookshop, and some of the local art and craft outlets. Or savour the delicious local produce: wildflower honey, fresh oysters, and salmon from the Colonsay Smokery; and some tasty food at the Pantry, the hotel or the cafe at Colonsay House Gardens. For entertainment, you might also find some local music in the bar or a ceilidh dance in the hall. There's something for everyone.
