Tucked away down a quiet country lane, Swallows Rest is a wonderful dog-friendly retreat on the north Cornish coast and offers the best of both worlds - the total seclusion of the countryside and the draw of the sea.

Nestled on the owner's farmland this is a beautiful (all on one level) detached two-bedroom barn and feels very much like a boutique hotel with its relaxed style. Dating back to the 1700s it has original stonework, beautiful decor and thoughtful little touches throughout and is the perfect destination any time of the year. The open plan living space is warm and snug complete with a large squishy corner sofa, puzzles and games, and a wood-burning stove which is perfect for cosy evenings all year round. In fact, when the weather sets in, there's no place better to snuggle up with a good book and hot drink with the sound of the wind and rain hitting the deck outside.

The kitchen is a foodie's delight, and the dining-area has a show stopping table and chairs and is a great entertaining space. A side door leads out onto the decked south-facing patio and if you fancy a spot of al fresco dining in the sunshine, why not go all out Italian and cook tasty pizzas in the outdoor pizza oven (available from May until October). The secluded outdoor bathtub overlooks the meadow and is the perfect place to soak and enjoy the blissful surroundings and as the sun starts to set you may be lucky and see a swallow or two.

Swallows Rest is the perfect place for a family or couples with a stylish family shower-room and two boutique-style bedrooms which all provide an oasis for a deep night's sleep and relaxation. The main bedroom is found at the end of the hallway ensuring privacy for all guests. This bedroom leads out onto the deck, oozes luxury, and the lavish en suite bathroom wouldn't look out of place in a five-star hotel.

Adjoining the deck, you have a wonderful, grassed area and at the top you will find (to your delight) a little bench and fire-pit; all you need to bring along are some marshmallows, and you are suddenly recreating those childhood campfire days whilst taking in the breathtaking sunsets. And of course, we can't forget to mention your friendly neighbourhood horses who might come up to the fence and say hello.

There are three other properties at Trebudannon Farm, and you are very welcome to stroll around the charming communal orchard with pond (please take care with small children and dogs) and sit for a while listening to the bird song. The younger guests may prefer to use the shared games-room where they will discover an array of fun things to while away an hour or two.

Getting out and about, there's so much to see and do from this perfect base you are spoilt for choice. You're in Cornwall so days out on the coast are a must. The north coast has so many great beaches on offer, you could pick a different one every day, and with Newquay, Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth being only a 15-minute drive away, you don't have to travel far to find three of the best. Here you can enjoy exhilarating surf, golden sands and endless miles of stunning coastal footpaths - perfect for you and your four-legged friend, if you have one in tow.

Swallows Rest has several country pubs close by and nearby the lively town of St Columb Major is only a few minutes' drive away. Here you will find local shops alongside hearty pubs and a great fish and chip shop if you fancy a night off cooking.

Why not pop into the popular towns of Padstow and Wadebridge for independent shopping and great places to eat and drink or hire a bicycle and cycle along the Cornish Way Cycle Route which is close by. If you would like to bring your own bikes along you will be happy to know that there is a wonderful shed on site that you can safely store them in. For gardening enthusiasts, the historic houses and gardens at the National Trust's Trerice and Lanhydrock will take you back to a Cornwall of a bygone age, and a trip to the world-renowned Eden Project or Heligan Gardens is a must.
