Situated on the shore of the tidal estuary of the Kyle of Durness, with panoramic views of the mountains and sea, Shore Cottage is a dream highland retreat. Comfortably furnished throughout and just a stone's throw from stunning beaches and mountains, it really is the ultimate escape for walkers and wildlife-watchers alike.

On entering Shore Cottage, guests will find a generous porch, with ample space for storing walking boots, waterproofs and picnic gear. Through the porch you'll enter the cosy open plan living spce. With huge windows that look out over the water of the Kyle, this room really feels like the heart of the home. There's a tastefully decorated sitting-area with an array of books and games to keep you entertained should the weather turn and a log-burner to ensure you're toasty all year round. The modern kitchen is well-equipped with all you could need to whip up a feast. Snug and serene with a view you just can't look away from, we suspect much of your time will be spent relaxing here.

To one side of the living space is the main bedroom. Furnished with a king-size bed and luxurious bed linen, it has a large adjoining bathroom with a bath, as well as an area of plentiful wardrobe storage. To the other side of the living space is the twin bedroom with two single beds and built-in wardrobe storage. Beautifully adorned, this bedroom also has an adjoining shower-room.

Next to the twin bedroom is a utility space, containing a washing machine and drying equipment. After a long day of walking, this provides a practical space to peel off those muddy layers and refresh yourself.

Outside the cottage there's a small patio area with an unforgettable view over the Kyle to the mountains beyond. The traditional wooden picnic bench is perfectly placed to relax and admire this vista whether sitting out with your morning coffee or enjoying an al fresco dinner.

Shore Cottage is located on the north coast and nearby you have the stunning natural sites of Sango Bay, Balnakeil Beach and Smoo Cave. Further afield there's Kinlochbervie, Loch Eriboll and Loch Hope. For quieter days, there's the Durness Golf Club and Balnakeil Craft Village.

If you need to get in supplies, we'd highly recommend the locally-owned Spar in Durness. Just a short drive away they provide everything you could possibly need or desire, from truffle mayonnaise and vegan chocolate to delicacies from around the world. The shop also delivers fresh meat and fish, and orders can be placed prior to arrival. Fresh oysters can be purchased from the oyster farm located in the Kyle. A visit to 'Cocoa Mountain', a gourmet chocolate shop and cafe, is usually a must for everyone who loves hot chocolate.

To the west of the Kyle of Durness is the peninsula known locally as 'The Capeside' and the winding 12 mile road leading to Cape Wrath Lighthouse, the furthest north west point on the UK mainland. The Cape can be visited by boat across the Kyle, which starts from a pier a few hundred yards from Shore Cottage, then a slow drive in a minibus down the old road. For those who come to walk, the Scottish 'right to roam' means the hills all around are free to walkers, provided they respect the farming activities of what is essentially sheep and cattle country. This right applies here and on the mainland side of the Kyle. There are also many formal walking and cycling trails on the mainland side.

In the surrounding area you'll also likely spot sheep, stags and highland cows, and if you're lucky you might even see eagles, puffins and otters. In summer you'll see the sunlight glisten on the waters and in the winter months there's every chance you'll experience snow and even the Northern Lights! What more could you want from a stay in the Scottish Highlands?
