Accessed via a series of four man-made tunnels carved through the cliffs, Tunnels Beaches near Ilfracombe are truly unique. Created in the 1820s, the tunnels lead visitors out onto sand and shingle beaches, complete with a Victorian sea pool. Sheltered by the cliffs, the beaches afford beautiful views and special atmosphere. A landscaped garden lends itself perfectly to picnics in the sun and there is even sun bed and wetsuit hire available. A cafe serves refreshments and lifeguards are on duty in the summer. A fee applies.

This route is along the highest of the sea cliffs in the Exmoor National Park. Starting at Combe Martin take the coast path around Wild Pear Beach, then a stiff climb to Little Hangman (715 feet high). Climb on - more gradual this time - up to 1046 feet and the summit of Great Hangman to get the best of the panorama across Combe Martin Bay.

Combe Martin is on the edge of Exmoor and claims to have the longest village street in England. Visit the Pack of Cards Inn, built to celebrate a large win at cards by George Lay in 1626; it has 52 windows, one for each card in the pack, and four floors, each with 13 doors. The beach is perfect for the whole family with rock pools, cliffs, caves and pebbles plus lots of soft sand when the tide is out.

Great for kayaking
Combe Martin is an attractive little bay and we had a great kayak tour with Surfside Kayaks. The Pack of Cards Inn is worth a visit and has an interesting history

Set deep in the north Devon countryside, The Rosemoor estate was once the home of Lady Anne Palmer. Lady Anne developed a passion for plants when she met noted plantsman Colllingwood Ingram while recuperating from measles in Spain. Over the next 30 years, she travelled the world to collect specimens for her garden, which she gave to the Royal Horticultural Society in 1988. The estate now comprises 65 acres of land, which includes rose gardens, a winter garden, a fruit and vegetable garden, a formal garden, woodlands, and many stream and lakeside plantings, making Rosemoor an enchanting place to visit whatever the season.

Fabulous place, outstanding gardens

An exceptional day out if you love nature and gardens. We were lucky our visit coincided with the Festival of Apples in October. Beautiful place and everything offered is of the highest standard.

Fanstastic
Spent the best part of the day exploring the walks around the estate and through the fabulous formal and informal gardens, plenty of seating in the grounds to appreciate the flowers, plants and trees, choice of refreshment options from snacks to restaurant, a very good shop and parking very easy, worth the effort to visit.

Gorgeous day out
As an RHS member and regular visit to Hyde Hall I’ve been keen to visit the other gardens so when on holiday nearby, a visit to Rosemoor was a must. It is truly fabulous, we visited on a beautiful, sunny, summer day so we saw it at it’s best but I can see how there is interest whatever time of year you visit.
The staff are friendly and we received a great welcome and explanation of the layout when we arrived, such a lovely touch.
The garden is split into two parts, Lady Anne’s garden which has beautiful trees and planting best seen at a gentle stroll and the more formal gardens laid our directly near the entrance which are also stunning. The cool garden was gorgeous especially on a hot day.

The garden is absolutely gorgeous and very well looked after. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and the restaurant had great locally sourced food. A great day out for adults and children.

Roses Galore!
The rose collection - one of the largest in the West Country - is very impressive. In full bloom in the summer, the scent of over 2,000 flowers is quite sensational. The Rose Weekend, held in June, was very informative, with advice on growing your own, as well as walks and activities for children.
Quad bike courses for children as young as six years old, a 4x4 off-road course, paintball and pony trekking.

Quads and horses
Something for everyone, some on the horses some on the quads, but both lots had fun.
A Regency house with extensive gardens that is home to a huge collection of period horse drawn carriages, a famous colony of Lesser Horseshoe bats, red deer and peacocks. Carriage rides are available.

Great house and gardens
Fantastic grounds and lovely house. Carriage museum is very good and full of information. Lovely food in the café, had to take some back to our cottage as so good. Well worth a visit, found some beautiful flowers in the gardens

A 17th century village pub offering freshly cooked food served in either the fireside bar or conservatory. Food is sourced locally including pork from rare breed Engish pigs and free range chickens who provide eggs for both the kitchen and for guests to buy.

Nice meal at The Rock
Lovely pub and restaurant, very family friendly. Great to sit out on a sunny afternoon and have a drink. The restaurant is in a conservatory to the rear of the building. Lovely food and very helpful friendly staff .
