Nearby beach
Accessed via a series of four man-made tunnels carved through the cliffs, Tunnels Beaches near Ilfracombe are truly unique. Created in the 1820s, the tunnels lead visitors out onto sand and shingle beaches, complete with a Victorian sea pool. Sheltered by the cliffs, the beaches afford beautiful views and special atmosphere. A landscaped garden lends itself perfectly to picnics in the sun and there is even sun bed and wetsuit hire available. A cafe serves refreshments and lifeguards are on duty in the summer. A fee applies.

Really Interesting
Worth a visit and only £3 entry!
Nearby walk
Situated on the edge of Barnstaple, Whiddon valley Woods is a small area of woodland with a plethora of wildlife to watch. A small clearing in the centre of the woodland provides the perfect spot to sit and watch the sqirrels and you can enjoy views over Barnstaple and the surrounding area.
Nearby town
One of north Devon’s largest towns, Barnstaple is a hive of activity all year round. The popular Pannier Market is good for a browse, while the Green Lanes shopping centre has many big high street retailers if you feel the urge to shop.

Pannier Market
We visited Barnstaple Pannier Market on a Tuesday late June and were surprised by how few stalls there were. The stallholders didn't greet customers. The market area may be busier later in the week but we didn't bother returning. The bread and cheese shop in Butchers Row very helpful and we would have loved to support them more during our stay locally. However the parking and all the road diversions around Barnstaple made us decide to avoid the town centre

Set deep in the north Devon countryside, The Rosemoor estate was once the home of Lady Anne Palmer. Lady Anne developed a passion for plants when she met noted plantsman Colllingwood Ingram while recuperating from measles in Spain. Over the next 30 years, she travelled the world to collect specimens for her garden, which she gave to the Royal Horticultural Society in 1988. The estate now comprises 65 acres of land, which includes rose gardens, a winter garden, a fruit and vegetable garden, a formal garden, woodlands, and many stream and lakeside plantings, making Rosemoor an enchanting place to visit whatever the season.

Fanstastic
Spent the best part of the day exploring the walks around the estate and through the fabulous formal and informal gardens, plenty of seating in the grounds to appreciate the flowers, plants and trees, choice of refreshment options from snacks to restaurant, a very good shop and parking very easy, worth the effort to visit.

Gorgeous day out
As an RHS member and regular visit to Hyde Hall I’ve been keen to visit the other gardens so when on holiday nearby, a visit to Rosemoor was a must. It is truly fabulous, we visited on a beautiful, sunny, summer day so we saw it at it’s best but I can see how there is interest whatever time of year you visit.
The staff are friendly and we received a great welcome and explanation of the layout when we arrived, such a lovely touch.
The garden is split into two parts, Lady Anne’s garden which has beautiful trees and planting best seen at a gentle stroll and the more formal gardens laid our directly near the entrance which are also stunning. The cool garden was gorgeous especially on a hot day.

Roses Galore!
The rose collection - one of the largest in the West Country - is very impressive. In full bloom in the summer, the scent of over 2,000 flowers is quite sensational. The Rose Weekend, held in June, was very informative, with advice on growing your own, as well as walks and activities for children.
Some amazing animals, including cheetahs and Arctic foxes. Close encounters are possible with some of them, including snakes and spiders.

Exmoor Zoo - rare animals
I visited this zoo on a rather damp misty day and there were very few people until it brightened up in the afternoon. The animals are nearly all endangered species some of which I had never heard of before. As most of them are small the area to walk around is not huge - there are no elephants, lions, camels etc. There are about 35 cages and a signed route so you don't miss any. There are talks/ feeding and some hands on every half hour but that means doubling back to and fro if you want to do them all. I enjoyed feeding and stroking a wallaby with a joey in her pouch and stroking a snake. There are some birds and off site they were rearing 4 rare parrots to be returned to the Amazon. There is an excellent very large covered area with picnic tables , a snack shack for drinks and a rather basic cafe. Extremely small number of toilets! There are some well known animals -as well as the wallabies there are meerkats, cheetahs, gibbons and some rare tiny marmozets in an indoor area.
This traditional thatched village pub is packed with rustic charm. Aiming to serve mouth-watering food concocted from the best local produce, the Chichester Arms is a popular choice for those looking for good pub-grub at reasonable prices. Parking is available and there is outdoor seating for those sunny days.

Great food and service
A very old but homely pub - great food - very big portions- varied menu and very friendly staff.
March 2010
A traditonal thatched village pub with a good reputation for quality locally sourced food. A very good wine selection and local ales on tap. The pub suffered a fire in 2007 but has been sympathetically restored back to its former glory.
Combe Martin is on the edge of Exmoor and claims to have the longest village street in England. Visit the Pack of Cards Inn, built to celebrate a large win at cards by George Lay in 1626; it has 52 windows, one for each card in the pack, and four floors, each with 13 doors. The beach is perfect for the whole family with rock pools, cliffs, caves and pebbles plus lots of soft sand when the tide is out.
