Close to some of north Devon’s best surfing beaches, Orchard Dene is in the heart of the lovely village of Georgeham, with two good pubs and a shop within walking distance. The sandy beach at Putsborough, adjoining Woolacombe, is just over a mile away.

This detached, family-friendly house offers a cheerful kitchen/diner, a sunny summertime sitting-room/playroom and a further sitting-room with a multi-burner, making this a cosy retreat for autumn holidays too.

The bedrooms and family bathroom are upstairs. Orchard Dene fronts one of the village roads, but at the back has a huge, fully enclosed sun-trap patio. Steep but safely gated steps lead down to the garden beyond, with its fabulous open-air unheated swimming pool.

Putsborough beach is the closest to Georgeham – about one and a half miles away by car along the country lanes. The owners very kindly provide all their guests with a parking permit for the private car park so you can park right next to the beach, where there is also a little tea shop and the all-important ice creams for the family.

Other excellent beaches are Croyde for surfing enthusiasts, Woolacombe (at the far end of the same bay as Putsborough) with its miles and miles of sand and dunes, and Saunton Sands which is a stunning place to walk especially when the tide is out.

However, there is more to this part of north Devon than the lure of the sea, it is an easy drive inland to Exmoor and the wild open spaces of this fantastic National Park. The deep valley above Lynton and Lynmouth is another favourite day out – visit Watersmeet where there is a National Trust tea shop by the tumbling river. Barnstaple is the nearest larger town where you can shop in the Pannier market and, if you want to leave the car behind, there is a bus every hour from the village. In the village itself there are two excellent pubs, serving delicious food, and a village shop just a short stroll along the road from the cottage.
