DoubleIf there was a definition of 'heaven on earth' then Penfoye would be it. With spellbinding waterside scenes, beautifully curated interiors and glorious gardens, this extra-special riverside retreat is a dream come true. Tucked away in the charming rural hamlet of Cliff, on the banks of the River Fowey and with direct access to the waters, the stunning setting captures beauty at every turn.
Laze in the hammock, let hours elapse gazing at the view, eat together at the large dining table or al fresco on the terrace, have fun on the water, cosy up in front of the wood-burner with a good read, lose yourself in the serenity that surrounds, enjoy late night chatter around the fire-pit and wonder whether you'll ever venture out to see what this charming part of Cornwall has to offer - and who can blame you.
Take the steps leading from the gate at the bottom of the garden down to your own private quay, where water pursuits prevail so don't forget to pack your fishing lines, kayaks, paddleboards and swimming togs because you are in for a treat. You may want to go all out and charter a boat for the week and truly explore the waterways, or maybe you simply want to sit on the quay with glass in hand and sip sundowners as the sun sets on another day. The choice is yours.
Penfoye is the perfect getaway for treating family and friends alike. The talented owner styles with great flair, cleverly combining an eclectic mix of designs and styles, that perfectly complement each other to create a much-loved home. You will feel as if you have stepped into a centre spread of Homes and Gardens.
The open plan kitchen, dining-room and snug are sure to become the heart of your holiday home with the large bi-fold doors leading out to the terrace and garden, perfectly framing that view. On chillier days light the wood-burning stove in the sitting-room and enjoy a holiday film together or lose yourself in the pages of a good book, there are plenty to choose from.
Uncover three gorgeous bedrooms on the first floor, all designed to provide a good night's sleep and relaxation. Two have en suite facilities and the third is next to the main bathroom so you can all have a bit of privacy.
There are miles of breathtaking riverside, coastal and country walks to discover so don't forget your walking boots. The circular walk around St Winnow church through Ethy Woods is quite special (don't forget to stop off at the seasonal farm shop for a delicious cream tea) as is the Hall Walk from Pont Creek, which includes two ferry rides across the estuary to the sailing town of Fowey.
Fowey is a fashionable sailing town with exceptional places to eat and drink and fabulous shops and galleries to mosey around.
For garden enthusiasts, the Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and Lanhydrock House (National Trust) are a must, as is The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery which serves up the finest view of Restormel Castle from its cafe. Polkerris Beach and Lantic Bay promise sandy-toe sojourns and to try your hand at sea fishing, join one of the charter boats from Looe, not forgetting to call by the charming village of Polperro along the way.
