Imagine a holiday right on the seashore of a very special beach, relaxing on your verandah with a glass of something refreshing, watching the gentle waves at one of the most famous fossil locations in the world. Monmouth Beach, at the west end of Lyme Regis, is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and home to the ammonite pavement, a stretch of foreshore with dozens of large ammonites on the exposed boulders and bedrock at low tide; some of the rocks date back to 199 million years ago.

This fabulous bijou chalet has been lovingly furnished and equipped and has all the essentials for a unique holiday right on the beach, just add sunscreen! The open plan living-area has a compact fitted kitchen with under-counter fridge, complete with ice-box for that perfect gin and tonic; the wet-room with shower, WC and wash-basin has snug under-floor heating for a touch of luxury at the seaside. Steep stairs lead to the bed 'shelf', with super comfy mattress, the headroom is very limited, but the hatch at the top of the stairs gives an amazing view out to sea (the sofa can also be pulled out to become a bed for flexibility, if required). There is even a little area for sitting and dining too.

Monmouth Beach is much quieter than the main town beach, a mixture of sand and rock, and is a fantastic location all year round. From your deck you can look across Lyme Bay to Golden Cap, the highest point along the south coast, an energetic but very worthwhile walk, The Anchor Inn at Seatown your reward at the end; further out in the bay you may be lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins.

A short stroll down to the iconic Cobb and you can watch the comings and goings of the fishing boats, or book a fishing trip and see this dramatic coastline from the water. Stroll along Marine Parade and choose from the many cafes, pubs, bars, restaurants, bistros and ice cream stalls, all the ingredients for a perfect seaside holiday. At the end of the promenade you will find the high street, with dozens of independent shops to browse, the Lyme Regis Museum and the Marine Theatre.

If you can tear yourself away from the coast, River Cottage HQ is a 5 minute drive, treat yourself to a special holiday meal or even a 1 day cookery course; the River Cottage Canteen and Deli, in nearby Axminster, is just 15 minutes away. A trip to the beach wouldn't be the same without something to take home and if you spend a little time, you will find a fossil on Monmouth Beach – one word of warning, follow the Fossil Code, there is a copy in the chalet; stay clear of the cliffs and make sure that you are aware of the tide times, better still take a guided fossil walk and learn from the locals. In 1811 local fossil collectors Mary Anning and her brother Joseph discovered the remains of some significant marine reptiles, a number of these can now be viewed in the Natural History Museum.

If you feel like getting in the car, the quirky market town of Bridport is a 15 minute drive eastward, whilst pretty Budleigh Salterton is to the west over the Devon border, or ride the Jurassic Coaster Bus to the Isle of Purbeck in the east, which is where this National Heritage Coastline starts at Old Harry Rocks, near Swanage.
