KingFound in the quiet hamlet of Leigh, Grade I Listed Leigh Barton is partly a designated ancient monument and a fine example of a medieval monastic grange with a 15th Century farmhouse and a gatehouse; the quality of the stonework is testament to the importance of the site. Detached Leigh Barn has its own terrace with landscaped lawn. Comfortable and welcoming, there's a spacious oak-floored sitting-room with a wood-burner, DAB radio with Bluetooth as well as superfast broadband that is perfect for those family film nights, plus a modern dining kitchen. Steps lead down to the ground floor bedroom with its en suite wet-room. Oak open-tread stairs lead to the spacious main bedroom which has arched windows, exposed beams and a contemporary en suite bathroom.
Leigh Barton boasts the most spectacular grounds, some three acres. With an array of colour and nature, whiling away your day in this fabulous setting is truly magical: the upper part of the garden is available for guests. A grassy footpath leads up through the arboretum to eight acres of wildflower meadows where you can watch the sun set over unspoilt countryside beyond the floodplain of the River Avon. In Churchstow, only one and a half miles away, there is a village shop and a pub/restaurant (Church House Inn). Kingsbridge is two miles away, Salcombe eight miles and Bantham (possibly the best beach and surf site on the south coast of England) is just five miles distant.
The history of this ancient site is really quite fascinating and the owner, when at home, is always delighted to show guests around the ranges. Originally the site of a fortified medieval farmhouse and a monastic grange (an outlying landholding) of nearby Buckfast Abbey, it now includes the south, west and north ranges of the house with a gatehouse in addition to buried remains beneath the Grade I Listed house.
However, if this unique piece of English architectural history is not quite your thing, Leigh Barn is just gorgeous, sitting in the former farmyard beyond the main house with plenty of room for a family or two couples to enjoy a relaxing holiday. And, of course, the South Hams has so much to offer visitors with glorious beaches (Bantham five miles), exhilarating clifftop walks and numerous pretty villages full of thatched cottages and welcoming pubs. Nearby Kingsbridge (two miles) is a busy little town and has an eclectic selection of shops, two supermarkets and restaurants or, further afield, Salcombe (eight miles) and the historic naval town of Dartmouth which is always worth a visit.
