Crantock village and its sandy beach are very popular with visitors to this area of north Cornwall, and justly so. Nestling in the centre of the village, The Hermitage is a semi-detached Grade II Listed archetypal thatched cottage with whitewashed walls and a little enclosed front garden.

Inside, guests are greeted with a wealth of original features as they step over the threshold; low beams, sloping ceilings and a very low lintel over the stairs give lots of character to this little cottage. The sitting/dining-room, formerly two separate rooms, has ornamental fireplaces at either end. Upstairs are two small, attractively furnished bedrooms and an ingeniously designed bathroom.

Outside, the sun-trap patio leads to the separate utility-room and sun-room. There is even an external heated shower, ideal for washing off sand or rinsing wetsuits. Guests will no doubt spend many evenings out on the patio, relaxing after a day at the beach.

Although close to Newquay with its surfers and fabulous beaches, Crantock feels like a different Cornwall, a reminder of times lived at a slower pace. The village has narrow lanes and old stone cottages surrounded by beautiful gardens, a small village green and ancient pubs. The nearby beach is backed by dunes, with the wildlife-rich grasslands of Rushy Green rising up behind them. At the far end of the beach is the headland of Pentire Point West with lovely Polly Joke beach, completely unspoilt and popular in early summer before the beaches become too crowded. A short drive away, the beaches of Perranporth, Watergate Bay and St Agnes are a must for surfers and paddlers alike and a trip to Porth and Padstow, with seaside shops, art galleries, tea-rooms and pubs should also be on the to-do list.
