Guest experience: My 80th in Kynance Cove, Cornwall

Dinah and her family spent a week in Nantivet (2399) a holiday cottage in Cornwall found on the Lizard peninsula.

Sometime during last year's bleak summer I started to wonder how I should mark my impending 80th birthday. I hit on the idea of a family holiday, not in March (my birthday) but at Spring Bank Holiday half term. I needed a property that would sleep eight and it had to be in easy reach of Kynance Cove, a spot that is very dear to my heart.

A little internet research brought me to Classic Cottages and from there to the beautiful Nantivet, in Mullion. I phoned to make a booking and - disaster - the bungalow had not yet been cleared by the owners  for a booking so far ahead. Classic Cottages were superb in keeping me up to date and as soon as the 2013 season was confirmed, following an email from Classic, my deposit was paid and it was now a case of getting through the dreary 2013/2013 winter.Fast forward to 24th May this year.

The first contingent of the family arrived at Nantivet on 24th May, followed next day by the remainder. Now, right from the start I have said that I only wanted one thing. Daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter, he who controls the remote, my husband of 45 years, Derek, and me for just one day all on the beach at Kynance. In glorious sunshine. After that they would all be free to do their own thing, meeting up at Nantivet at the end of the day. Some hopes, you might say, as my husband kept warning me that it might not happen as temperatures continued to stay well below normal.

The perfect birthday present

Well, on the Sunday, it did happen, all that I could have hoped for. A glorious day, all the family, on the beach in warm sunshine at Kynance Cove, still as magical and beautiful as ever. The following day it rained all day!!! For the rest of the week, the weather was mixture of sunshine and showers that we all have to deal with in our variable climate, but everyone got out and about, cliff path walking for the energetic, pottering about for the rest and the beautiful Nantivet there to welcome us back from our various adventures.

A memorable week  and memories to take with me for what ever time is left. Thank you, family and thank you Classic Cottages for making all this (apart from the weather) happen.

Charlestown is immediately recognisable to fans of Poldark as the harbour in the series. The joy of it as a location is that they’ve hardly had to change much at all.
