Mýse, Hovingham
Main Street, Hovingham, York YO62 4LF
One Michelin star
Yorkshire’s newest restaurant to gain a coveted Michelin star, Mýse enjoys a dreamy setting in the rolling Howardian hills in North Yorkshire and offers the warmest of Yorkshire welcomes. Vines creep up the beautiful stone walls, while the characterful dining room promises an elegant yet relaxed space to enjoy a Michelin starred meal.
With Northern generosity at heart, the menu plays with traditional Yorkshire cuisine to create dishes that celebrate the area’s rich history and local food producers, while also crafting something new for the tastebuds. There’s also a superb vegetarian menu featuring the likes of homemade seeded sourdough with ampersand butter and slow-cooked rocket and russet tomatoes, roasted kohlrabi with barbecued leaves and a chive butter sauce, and broad bean porridge with confit ceps, fresh cheese, and whey. If the food sparks your inspiration, Mýse also offers cookery workshops, so you can learn how to cook like a Michelin star chef, from delicious homemade breads to foraging along Yorkshire’s bountiful hedgerows.
Forge at Middleton Lodge Estate, Richmond
Middleton Lodge Estate, Kneeton Lane, Middleton Tyas, Richmond DL10 6NJ
One Michelin green star
Dedicated to sustainability and sourcing many of its ingredients from the estate’s gardens or local producers, it’s of little surprise that Forge has received a Michelin green star for its efforts. The Forge’s team works hard to preserve the surrounding landscape, while taking cues from the rolling seasons on what to grow and when. The timeless style of the restaurant marries perfectly with the restaurant’s ethos, with exposed stone and shelves upon shelves of thriving plants creating a calming and oh-so-relaxed space in which to dine.
When it comes to dining here, you have a giddy choice between a six and ten-course menu, which changes regularly depending on what’s plucked from the garden outside. You can expect the likes of English mushroom biscuit with Barncliffe mascarpone and black winter truffle, dry-aged hogget with celeriac and toasted yeast cream, and honey cream with Yorkshire rhubarb and sorrel. Fabulous vegetarian and vegan tasting menus are also available (as well as pescatarian and gluten-free options), which feature dishes such as potato with horseradish and barbecued kale, salted Estate pears and walnut tartlet with umeboshi vinegar, and preserved orchard apples with cinnamon and ginger. Each menu comes with an optional wine pairing, allowing you to truly sink into the carefully curated flavours that have been gathered from across the rolling landscapes of Yorkshire.
The Angel, Hetton
Back Lane, Hetton, Skipton BD23 6LT
One Michelin star
Although one of the youngest restaurants on this list, The Angel has wasted no time in collecting a series of awards that demonstrate its devotion to top-notch cuisine. In fact, the restaurant earned its Michelin star just 12 months after opening its doors.
Led by equally award-winning chef patron Michael Wignall, the team at The Angel work tirelessly to produce dishes that all but leap from the plate, from toothsome flavours to striking visual arrangements. You can expect modern dishes that celebrate simplicity and finesse, all while using local and seasonal ingredients wherever possible.
For those who enjoy freedom of choice, the a la carte menu is a skilful whirlwind of tempting dishes. Start your delectable journey with lemon sole, sea vegetables, confit la ratte, and smoked pike roe, continue with Scottish venison, parsley root, pine, agnolotti, and Jerusalem artichoke, and finish with an ‘Opera’ of single estate chocolate, mocha, preserved summer cherries, and jersey milk. Of course, if you fancy being led by the hand through a series of decadent dishes, the tasting menu is the way to go; from Hokkaido milk bread and smoked aubergine to Shetland turbot with seaweed. Oh, and their Sunday lunch offering is second to none and the perfect way to finish a week of Yorkshire explorations.
Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall, Ripon

One Michelin star
With vegetables and herbs so local they’re grown in the restaurant’s very own kitchen garden, and with meat, seafood and cheeses carefully selected from around Yorkshire, Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall is a true celebration of home-grown produce and unbeatable local flavours.
The best way to experience Yorkshire’s wondrous larder is to delve into the ‘Taste of Home’ tasting menu, which boasts a delightful series of courses that take the taste buds on a tour through the county’s very best flavours, from English truffle cruffin to Yorkshire rhubarb souffle. This tasty journey comes with the opportunity for a wine pairing, which includes non-alcoholic, signature, and prestige options. The food may be the star of the show, but the dining room is definitely worth a standing ovation too. Set in the beautiful 17th century house, grand décor and opulent ceilings welcome you as you take your seat at one of the wonderfully intimate tables. Or, for a private dining experience with a difference, you can book the Kitchen Table, which sets you and seven lucky guests amidst the heart of the action. Black Swan, Oldstead
Oldstead, York YO61 4BL
One Michelin star and one Michelin green star
Tucked away along the back lanes by the North York Moors and enjoying exposed beams, flagstone floors, and a roaring fire in the colder months, Black Swan combines country pub vibes with incredible Michelin-starred food for a welcoming and totally luxurious experience from the moment you walk through the door.
Family-run and with a real focus on home-grown, reared, and foraged ingredients (many of which come from the surrounding family farm), Black Swan shines a light on tradition while creating a modern culinary adventure – the cocktails need to be tasted to be believed! This ethos is highlighted by their Michelin green star, which puts them in the top percentage for sustainable restaurants.
Offering an incredible tasting menu that’s laden with farm-to-fork delights, it’s wonderfully easy to get swept away by the flavoursome dishes. Dine on pork, black apple, and turnip; leek, wild garlic, and lardo; and for those that have a sweet tooth, rhubarb, yoghurt, and lemon verbena. Of course, to make the most of the fields, hedgerows, and even beehives, Black Swan takes a seasonal approach to its menu, which ensures you can visit throughout the year and enjoy something entirely new each time.
Roots, York
68 Marygate, York YO30 7BH
One Michelin star
The second Banks family restaurant to hold a Michelin star in Yorkshire (the first being Black Swan), Roots continues the tradition of creative dishes that are chock with outstanding local ingredients and really shine a light on Yorkshire’s agricultural heritage, while upholding the seasonality and sustainability the Banks family holds dear.
Set within an Arts and Crafts building in historic York, the laid-back setting pairs perfectly with the wholesome ethos of the restaurant. Putting exciting (and delicious) cooking techniques to the test, the menu melds tradition with the new as you taste your way through Yorkshire and beyond. From Oldstead charcuteries to trout, scallop, or aged beef, the tasting menu boasts a dish for every palate. We particularly recommend adding in the cheese course for those who love a dairy-fuelled interlude during their meal.
Over 130 wines are at the ready to compliment each dish, or you can leave your lip-smacking experience in the skilled hands of the sommelier and opt for the drinks package, which is carefully curated to pair perfectly with the tasting menu.
