Bruton Cottages
Bruton is a small, picturesque town set in a valley around the River Brue. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in what it offers. It's now a trendy hub of fine dining and art set around the single high street that carves its way down the hillside and over the river.Read more
Many quirky alleyways lead to lanes lined with ancient architecture and tree-lined dells to sit by the waterside - cross the footbridge and walk Lover's Lane. Venture down one of these streets and you'll find delights such as the Hauser and Wirth gallery that has international repute. At The Chapel restaurant has helped put Bruton on the map with its simple local menu, wine store and setting in a converted chapel.
The history of Bruton is long and interesting; this ancient settlement features many nods to its past as a Benedictine Monastery and a dovecot stands proud, though somewhat ruined, on a beautiful green hill a short walk from the town centre. From here you can truly appreciate the rural location of rolling countryside and vernacular buildings. You'll also notice one or two boarding schools - for a small town there are three private schools; Kings School Bruton occupies beautiful stone buildings in the heart of the town, Sexeys school is further up the valley, with Bruton School for Girls at the end. As a result, there's a lively atmosphere bubbling beneath the surface of what otherwise seems a quietly beautiful place to holiday. Bruton is well placed in the county for visiting other popular towns such as Frome, Yeovil and Taunton and is certainly worthy of its high end reputation.
