The Bear is a wonderful historic cottage in a picturesque hamlet, just a mile from the dramatic north Devon coast at Hartland Quay. This family-sized holiday home is dog-friendly, has an enclosed garden and is in a setting that is all about walking and exploring the unspoilt countryside around Hartland Abbey on the Hartland peninsula and of course along the South West Coast Path.

The coastline here is one of cliffs, hidden coves, rock pools and beautifully clean sand at low tide. There are some fabulous sandy surfing beaches an easy drive away at Sandymouth and Welcombe Mouth just over the border with Cornwall, or at Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe beyond Barnstaple.

The cottage is filled with the character you would expect from a property with 16th Century origins and its intriguing name is a hint of its past importance to the village as a pub!

This spacious property has a really good-sized sitting-room with wood-burning stove in the inglenook fireplace and a snug that could be used as a cot-room. The kitchen has a range cooker and a lovely farmhouse table, and beyond it a door to the delightful cottage garden. There are four bedrooms, two bathrooms and en suite facilities in the main bedroom.

One of the bedrooms and a bathroom are on the ground floor making the cottage very flexible for different family groups.

The Bear belongs to the Hartland Abbey estate and the little hamlet of Stoke is within walking distance of the Abbey, where the seasonal tea-room is open to the public from the end of March through to the end of September.

Hartland point, with its little kiosk in season, is a spectacular place to walk to. Hartland village is within walking distance and you can buy most things; there's a coffee shop in the square and various galleries and potteries.

Little country lanes or footpaths take you to the coast where the coves at Hartland Quay and Welcombe are two of the most popular with local people. A tide timetable is a very useful resource for exploring the many coves and you may well have them all to yourselves. The energetic will be rewarded with the most amazing views as they tackle this section of the South West Coast Path.

Well worth a visit are the historic fishing villages at Clovelly – be prepared for a steep walk back up the hill from this car-free village – and Appledore. Instow has a gorgeous sandy beach and Westward Ho! is a great family seaside town with a blue flag beach and a huge expanse of sand.
