How do we begin to eulogise about Lavethan Mill?

Should we start with the location, the privacy, or the loving restoration and exemplary standard of furnishing in this award-winning renovation? To ensure that this 16th Century mill’s architecture and essence is safeguarded forever, it is Grade II Listed which means there are some low beamed ceilings, small split-landing staircases, large oak staircases, slate floors, higgledy-piggledy rooms, ups and downs and a waterwheel which is turned by the leat that fed it all those centuries ago!

The accommodation is certainly not 16th Century though as there are luxurious and spacious living-rooms and perfectly gorgeous bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Integral to each other, the mill and the cottage next door are now one property.

The mill accommodates the amazing bespoke, wanting-for-nothing kitchen, complete with Aga, where you really will enjoy socialising together, cooking, dining and planning the next great adventure whilst admiring the historic water wheel’s machinery. The large sitting-room and three of the bedrooms are divided over the first and second floors and all have views over the beautiful landscaped gardens, waterwheel, leat, granite terraces and winding paths that will provide hours of exploration and delight. Through the slate-floored hallway into the other side of the property is your truly Cornish cottage with low ceilings and timber-clad walls, just perfectly styled to allow guests room to spread out and enjoy some privacy.

Outside the Mill has it all, al fresco dining, a fabulous pizza oven and barbecue area and privacy from prying eyes as you enjoy the tranquility of this unique bolthole in Cornwall.

There is a large enclosed orchard where children and adults may enjoy a game or two of football or tag. The leat is divided off from a stream which runs the length of the spacious grounds down the side of the driveway. At one point the stream cascades over granite boulders and has formed a pond deep enough to swim in, if the weather permits.

At the end of the drive you can explore the Camel Trail as it meanders approximately 15 miles through unspoilt north Cornish countryside from Wenford Bridge via Bodmin and Wadebridge to the fishing port and tourist attraction of Padstow on the Camel river estuary. Less than a mile up the road is the attractive moorland village of Blisland with its unspoilt pub, a post office and general store. Although there are railings please take care around the stream, leat and waterwheel ducts. Guests will be shown the workings of the waterwheel on special request.

Part of Lavethan Mill is available as Lavethan Mill Cottage (3223) for four or Lavethan Mill House (4380) for six.
