Very pretty and clean house, the surroundings are unbelievable: when you look out the window, there’s Sharptor, right at your doorstep. Looks like a picture but it’s real! Great for walking, lots to see and discover. Our boys and dog loved it here too. Owners are very friendly and helpful. No neighbours so very quiet. Would love to come and stay again some day. ...

What a wonderful week in Dartmoor! Blessed with super hot weather, we spent every day exploring the moor, from north to south (Chagford village is gorgeous), east to west (don't miss Lydford Gorge) and all the nooks and crannies in-between. Steve, the owner, does a gentle 'meet and greet' and is on hand if you have any questions or need anything. He's very down to earth, has a great sense of humour and is just a lovely bloke with a good heart. He shares a stunning thatched cottage opposite The Shippon with his partner, Tracy, but you'd hardly know they were there... We booked The Shippon due to its proximity to Bovey and Craft Festival 2023, an incredible arts event we attend almost every year, but The Shippon offered us so much more... Such a beautiful location. We loved the wild orchids in the meadow, the stunning view of Sharp Tor and the surrounding area, the walks from the back gate, the ponies and deer across the Moor, and the little cuckoo who visits the garden daily. And inside, we had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. Spotlessly clean, this rather funky Shippon conversion is rather special. With a slightly 70s vibe, super squishy sofas, a steep, wooden staircase that makes you feel like a child climbing up to a treehouse at bedtime, The Shippon will tug at your heartstrings and you'll probably find it difficult to leave. Ashburton is a lovely little town packed with a supermarket, eateries, antiques and gift shops and is just a hop and skip from Oldsbrim. So, although The Shippon feels wonderfully remote, that's a little magic trick! Widecombe in the Moor is a delightful village for a wander, and at just 15 minutes away from the Shippon, The Cafe on the Green is perfect for breakfast or lunch. Every meal we've had there has been excellent. The Warren House Inn is another great place for a meal with a view. At 1425ft above sea level, it's the highest pub in southern England, with fabulous view across Dartmoor. On a very sunny, very hot afternoon, it's a superb place for a cold beer and a pasty. The Shippon provides a great base if you wish to explore the delights of Dartmoor by car, or fill your days with walking trips, pony trekking (The Shippon has it's own stables if you wish to bring your horse!), or you just want to chill out in the garden with a good book and a great view! We'll be back... ...

The Shippon is a beautifully appointed, immaculately clean cottage with a well equipped kitchen and dog friendly garden and field. The owners (who live next door) are incredibly hospitable if needed, but otherwise afford guests privacy. It’s back gate leads directly onto the Moors without going onto the road. Lovely and warm inside (during a cold spell). Sustainable ethos. A perfect retreat in every way....

If you want to explore Dartmoor, this is the cottage for you. We loved it and so did the dogs. Steve is a great host, full of information and great walk tips. Hopefully we'll return in 2024.

A very enjoyable stay in a beautifully renovated cottage in a superb location on Dartmoor. Very friendly reception from the owners, Steve and Tracey. Highly recommended.
