Poppy Yurt
2720 is no longer with usIf you were looking for cottages like Poppy Yurt, how about trying these:
Conjure up in your mind a small piece of south Devon rural heaven. Four and a half acres of wildflower meadows, woodlands, a stream and a large lake - and then think of a bit of 'glamping' glamour bang in the middle of this unspoilt rural escape.
Poppy is a fabulous yurt standing tall on a wooden deck built into the side of the meadow with gorgeous views over the surrounding countryside. The wood-burner offers cosy comfort and will also boil the kettle, the bed is piled high with lovely linens and cushions, there is a futon for the fifth guest if needs be and the owners even provide a lovely box of locally-made goodies, including their own home-made honey and local cheeses!
Inside there is masses of space to enjoy a romantic dinner a deux. Or out on the deck where a full-size gas barbecue and sink with hot and cold water, also under cover, provides great cooking facilities. Carefully constructed and still under canvas is the adjoining baby yurt containing the bunk-beds and a modern sparkling bright shower-area with wash-basin and flushing toilet. This is luxury camping at its best with hot water on tap (the water is from a bore hole which is tested regularly) and electricity for those techie gadgets we all seem to rely on.
If you bring the kids then they will no doubt disappear for hours making dens, trying out their skills bobbing about on the lake (children must always be supervised) and playing Swallows and Amazons by commandeering the two small islands, Alice and Milo. For the nature lovers amongst you there is plenty to see, not least the enormous variety of wild birds so dig out that old 'Observer's Book of Birds' and see how many you can identify.
From the minute you pull in off the Totnes to Dartmouth road (which can be busy during the day) you will be thrilled. The owners will load your luggage onto a buggie and drive it up to Poppy while you stroll up through the meadow. Even poor weather cannot dampen the enjoyment as the yurt is all fully weatherproof and cosy.
Jump into the car and enjoy the delights of the local pub or explore Totnes with its interesting Friday morning market and eco-friendly shopping centre and Dartmouth with its proud naval tradition, this is a fantastic spot. Blackpool Sands, one of the South Hams' loveliest beaches is just a short drive, but it is likely you will just kick back, relax and unwind in this wonderful spot and merely venture out for vital supplies from time to time.
Just down the hill from Poppy and completely screened by trees and shrubs, is Ashley's Shack a dear little log cabin for two. So you may wish to bring another couple with you, perhaps Grandma and Grandpa, so you can meet up during the day but be completely separate overnight.
